BRISTOL, R.I.- The RWU volleyball team earned a second-place finish, behind host Springfield College, in the two-day Tom Hay Invitational held in Springfield, Mass., Friday and Saturday. Hawks senior Kirsten Bosworth (Centerville, Mass.) and junior Kristina Dolan (Glenmont, N.Y.) both earned All-Tournament Team honors.
Springfield earned its 21st win of the season en route to a perfect 4-0 record and the Tom Hay title. RWU placed second, improving to 15-9 overall, while Plymouth State finished third followed by Westfield State.
The Hawks began the tournament facing fellow The Commonwealth Coast Conference member, Western New England College, which RWU defeated in five sets earlier this season. In Friday's match RWU defeated the Golden Bears in four games, 25-18, 29-31, 25-20, 25-10.
Sophomore Brittney Sullivan (Nashua, N.H.) led the Hawks with 11 kills, along with 11 digs. Sophomore Jill Hurd (Sunapee, N.H.) posted a team-high 14 digs in the contest, while Bosworth notched 33 assists. As the team, RWU posted a .248 hitting percentage.
Facing Springfield College 30 minutes later, RWU started strong battling to a first-set 25-23 loss. The Pride's serving took over from there, including a 9-point serving run by senior Jessica Baldwin in the middle of the second set. Springfield went on to take the final two sets, 25-13, 25-12.
On the second day of competition RWU met Plymouth State University in a 9 a.m. match-up. RWU performed well, defeating the Panthers, 3-1, by the scores of 25-15, 21-25, 26-24, 25-12. Dolan posted a game-high 13 kills with just two errors in the match, while sophomore Rebekah Dion (Old Saybrook, Conn.) notched nine kills with zero errors on 19 swings. Hurd led the team with 16 digs and Bosworth recorded 30 assists.
In the Hawks final match of the tournament, they started strong, winning the first set 25-19 before faltering in the second, 25-21. RWU rebounded well after a 25-10 loss to take the fourth set, 25-18. In the deciding set, Westfield State prevailed, 15-7.
Dion, Dolan and junior Erica DoVale (Hope, R.I.) all posted double-digit kills in the match, helping the team to a .170 hitting percentage.
